Growing Greens, Growing Values

Rooftop Plantation – Season 2

Following the success of our previous harvest, the Rooftop Plantation project has entered its second season. The first harvest was a special moment for our students; the vegetables they grew were presented to the school’s ancillary staff in gratitude for their dedicated service. Inspired by this meaningful experience, they eagerly began planting a new variety of seasonal vegetables, including spinach, okra, tomatoes, and eggplant. Under the guidance of House Coordinators and teachers, students prepared the soil and pots and learned about the importance of proper planting techniques, soil care, and patience in gardening.

The Rooftop Plantation activity provides students with valuable hands-on learning opportunities. It helps them understand the life cycle of plants, encourages environmental awareness, and teaches responsibility through regular monitoring and care of the plants. Sowing seeds was an important learning experience for students. They learnt how different seeds require different planting methods, including correct depth and spacing. Students also learned that gardening requires patience, care, and consistency.

Fenugreek and coriander cultivation, however, did not yield satisfactory results, highlighting valuable learning opportunities in crop management and environmental adaptation. Tomato and brinjal seeds were then sown; tomato seeds have begun to germinate, while the initial brinjal sowing did not show growth. Therefore, brinjal seeds have been replanted and are currently under observation for germination.

Meanwhile, the spinach crop successfully reached the harvesting stage. House captains carefully harvested the spinach by cutting the leaves while leaving a portion of the stem intact to ensure regrowth. Additional fertilisers were applied to support continued growth and productivity. The harvested spinach was thoughtfully distributed among a few teachers who had serious health issues, as a gesture of care, appreciation, and goodwill. This not only promoted sustainable practices but also reflected the values of empathy and community within the school.
