We are very excited about the outcome of our Rooftop Plantation Project! We have an update below, but first please read all about how it started: https://pechsgs.edu.pk/growing-greens-growing-values/
The excitement was unmistakable when the first vegetable crowns began peeking through the soil. Students gathered around with bright smiles and eager voices, proudly pointing out the visible results of their hard work. Soon, the radishes and turnips were ready for harvest. The Water House team, along with the captains of Water, Air, and Sun Houses, carefully harvested the vegetables with great enthusiasm.
The freshly picked produce was peeled, neatly arranged in dishes, and presented to the ancillary staff as a healthy organic salad. The vegetables, grown naturally and nurtured with dedication, were fresh, pure, and pleasantly sweet. The ancillary staff thoroughly enjoyed the thoughtful gesture, and the students felt immense pride in sharing the fruits of their labour.
Not every plant thrived as expected. Despite careful attention and sincere efforts, the coriander did not grow successfully, and the chillies eventually withered away. Although this was disappointing, it became an important learning experience for the students. They understood that gardening requires patience, resilience, and acceptance that nature does not always respond as planned: even when we try our very best.
During the process, a minor infestation was observed and promptly managed using conventional and eco-friendly methods, with affected leaves carefully removed. This further strengthened the students’ understanding of plant care and responsibility.
Throughout the activity, students diligently followed the school mantra i.e. Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Neat, whether working together, handling tools responsibly, or cleaning the area after completing their tasks. The project reinforced the importance of collaboration, as they realised that successful outcomes depend on teamwork, communication, and mutual support.
This hands-on initiative not only taught responsibility and teamwork but also gave students the rewarding experience of nurturing nature, learning from challenges, and celebrating collective effort. The rooftop garden became more than just a project – it became a living lesson in patience, perseverance, and pride in shared achievement.
