Field Trip Year 7 – Off to the TPL Mangrove Biodiversity Park

After studying about Mangrove Forests extensively in their art classes during Term 1, our three sections of Year 7 visited the TPL Mangrove Biodiversity Park at Korangi Creek from December 16 – 18, 2024.

The park works with the Sindh Forest Department on protecting our mangrove forests and the wildlife species from urban threats such as pollution, fishing and the cutting down of mangroves. They provide important educational information about mangroves, the environment and plan to work with local fishermen and communities to foster urgently needed activism. The park also has bird watching towers for bird lovers!

Our students were delighted to be able to gain additional knowledge about mangroves and participated in discussions about how essential mangroves are for our eco-system as they form natural barriers against storms, and provide a rich environment for local biodiversity along our coastline.

Seeing the mangroves up close, in person, our students experienced the sounds, smell and taste of the mangroves, got time to sketch the beautiful views around them and ‘walk the waters!’ Touring the mangroves was exhilarating and exciting for them as the wooden walkways in the park are floating on the water. These are built from upcycled decommissioned ships as walkways that float on barrels!

This trip gave our students the tangible experience of a location in our city that is a serene, tranquil space imbibing eco-friendly practices in a community space open for all to enjoy!
