Support for Learning (SfL) Unit

The SfL Unit’s work is based on the belief and philosophy that:

– All children want to learn, be accepted and behave in ways that make them part of a group setting which is respectful and nurturing.

– We believe that intrinsic motivation is what works in the long term and that we are not interested in shortcuts to behaviour management, which belittles students and cripples the development of emotional wellbeing and mental health.

– Children who misbehave continuously, actually need our help. They need nurturing and positivity in their life, not unkind punishment.

– Children occasionally need some extra support to understand and assimilate new or difficult concepts taught in class. Some one-on-one or small group instruction/support can be very helpful in helping them get over the hurdle.

The SfL Unit aims to:

– Ensure the School becomes a Safe Space to the extent that is possible

– Provide crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at school or home

– Confer with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other staff to discuss children’s progress, resolve behavioural, academic and other problems, and to determine priorities for students based on their needs

– Counsel individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioural problems affecting their work, interactions with others and their mental health

– Counsel students regarding educational issues, such as course and programme selection, class scheduling and registration, school adjustment, truancy, study habits, and career planning.

All the above aims are met through the following programmes:
